MODOT | Work Zone Safety in Missouri Tuesday, April 06, 2010

by JudyAnn Lorenz on April 26, 2010

MODOT representatives shared information about work zone safety at the Houston, Missouri Chamber of Commerce monthly luncheon on April 6, 2010.  The official Work Zone Safety Week as April 19-23, 2010.  But, the necessity for driver awareness and care began before that first April Monday and long after the week ended.

Work Zone Safety.

A refrigerator magnet reminds me as I gather my lunch in the morning before hitting the road to work. Reminds me to move departure time up a few minutes to allow time for slowdowns in work zones. Reminds me to watch out for the REAL PEOPLE whom I will be driving past. Sometimes the workers are cleaning the roadside and trimming the brush. Sometimes they are mowing. Sometimes they are making major road repairs or new construction. They are probably running noisy equipment or working close by. They probably won’t know that I am anywhere near.

The same will count for you. The WATCH-OUT responsibility is ours. There is a greater penalty than the multiplied fines if a driver should strike and injure a MODOT worker. The driver will have to live with their carelessness for the rest of their lives.

As part of an immediate awareness campaign, MODOT has a contest in action. By using the “Enter to Win Baseball tickets, entrants have a chance to view games with either the St. Louis Cardinals or the Kansas City Royals. There is a link on the page for Traveler Information that has updates on active work zones.  (As of April 26, the ticket form was still on the website; maybe the tickets option will be working after the Big Week for Workzone Safety).

Travelers can use the same web page to Rate Work Zones (maybe things could be even safer). Operation Orange, reflected in the pictured frig magnet and decorating gestures by businesses is yet another community of the neighbors expressing dedication to Don’t Barrel Through The Work Zone.

MODOT is making efforts to use multimedia, including social media to get the safety message out in preventative information before tragedy occurs.  Don’t Barrel Through Work Zones

Check out the page that is intended to keep us all informed so that we can take responsibility and create our own safer neighborhood.
